An official of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Thursday revealed startling statistics about the number of Nigerians who have died from instances of collapsed buildings across the country.
According to him, no fewer than 3,235 people have died as 252 buildings collapsed between 2007 and 2018.
SON’s Head of Construction Management Unit, Mr. Paul Oke, offered the details on Thursday while speaking with journalists in Gombe, adding that properties worth N3.5bn was lost within the 12-year period over building collapses in Nigeria.
While ruling building collapse as both natural and man-made disasters due to poor supervision and refusal to use certified materials, among other things, Oke called on professional bodies to halt the trend.
“A contractor/developer needs to concentrate his time and resources in these sectors in order to accomplish set goals for the client/organization against the collapse of buildings,” he said.
“Incidents of collapsed buildings can, however, be reduced if not completely eliminated if relevant bodies in charge of giving approvals engage the services of experienced civil or structural engineers,” he said.
