South Africa Shock Hosts, Egypt, With Late Goal To Reach Last Eight
Hours after the Super Eagles earned a 3-2 win to dump defending champions, Cameroon, out of AFCON 2019, South Africa handed hosts, Egypt the same treatment in another marginal victory.
Seven-time African champions, Egypt, were left stunned as Thembinkosi Lorch’s late strike silenced the home fans as South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday night.
Widely regarded as the underdogs having made it to the knock rounds as one of the four best third-placed teams, the Bafana Bafana took to the field showing no fear as they were only thwarted by the impressive Egypt goalkeeper.
Egypt’s best chance fell to Trezeguet, who had been the hero more than once in the tournament but he would be left ruing his poor finishing on at least two occasions as Lorch scored with barely four minutes of normal time remaining to win the match for his team.
