South-East Governors In Closed-door Meeting Amid Pervasive Insecurity

  • There have also been attacks on security agencies in the region.

As part of efforts to tackle the widespread insecurity that plagues the region, governors from the south-east on Sunday met behind closed doors in Enugu state.

Also present at the meeting are heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.

The development is coming hours after gunmen stormed the country home of Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo state, and razed some vehicles and parts of the building.

Declan Emelumba, the Imo commissioner for information who confirmed the incident, said the security men killed were on duty at the house of the governor.

“It is not true that several security men lost their lives. About two security men on duty at the governor’s house were killed. NSCDC personnel was among the security men who lost their lives during the attack,” he said.

Hours after the attack, the military had announced a raid on the “headquarters” of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) — an outfit set up by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Mohammed Yerima, army spokesman, said during the raid on Saturday, the deputy commander of ESN, identified as Ikonson commander, and six others were killed.

There have also been attacks on security agencies in the region.

The meeting is the second of its kind within the past two weeks — the last time the governors held a similar meeting was exactly two weeks ago, on April 11, during which the establishment of Ebube Agu, the security outfit for the south-east region, was announced.
