South Korea President Declares Emergency Martial Law
South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in a surprise late-night TV announcement on Tuesday.
He accused the main opposition party, the Democratic Party, of supporting North Korea and engaging in actions against the state.
President Yoon said the opposition’s recent moves, including an attempt to impeach top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal, were acts of rebellion.
He called their actions “anti-state behavior” and claimed they have “paralyzed the government and turned parliament into a group of criminals.”
Yoon explained that martial law was necessary to remove what he called “pro-North, anti-state forces.”
He said this step was vital to protect citizens’ freedom, ensure safety, and secure the nation’s future.
Reports from local media said the parliament speaker is on the way to the National Assembly to convene a session, but the entrance to the building is blocked, preventing lawmakers from entering.
President Yoon also accused the Democratic Party of creating chaos, harming public safety, and making the South Korea a “drug haven.”
He stated that the opposition was trying to overthrow the democratic system and warned that the country is in a dangerous state, “on the edge of collapse.”
He promised to act quickly to bring the country back to normal and eliminate anti-state threats.
While acknowledging that martial law may cause inconvenience, Yoon assured the public that the government would work to reduce its impact.
