reports that Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has urged Muslims to stop harassing Isese adherents, saying that the tradition is here to stay.
Soyinka, who spoke at a public event in Lagos on Friday, said that Isese is a path to enlightenment and liberation that should be respected by all.
He condemned the detention of Isese devotee Adegbola Abdulazeez, who was arrested and charged with defamation for speaking out against the Emir of Ilorin.
Soyinka said that Abdulazeez’s detention was an act of religious intolerance and that it should not be tolerated.
He called on Muslims to embrace tolerance and respect for other faiths.
“Isese is a tradition that has been around for centuries,” Soyinka said. “It is not going away. Muslims should learn to live with it.”
Soyinka also warned Muslims against spreading misinformation about Isese. He said that Isese is not a religion of hate and that it does not promote violence.
“Isese is a religion of peace and love,” Soyinka said. “It is a tradition that should be celebrated, not harassed.”
