Spanish Supercopa: Real Madrid Defeat Atletico On Penalties In Final

Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 on penalties to win the Spanish Supercopa in Saudi Arabia on Sunday night.

In a low-quality match in which opportunities were scarce, Zinedine Zidane’s side prevailed on spot kicks as the Rojiblancos missed two of their three efforts.

Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos all converted, with the Madrid captain coolly dispatching the winning kick after Saul had hit the post and Thomas Partey saw his effort saved by Thibaut Courtois.

In the game itself, Joao Felix fired wide when gifted an early opportunity by Ramos early on and Luka Jovic hit an angled drive just off target in the second half.

There was a frantic finale in extra time, with chances at both ends as the two sides sought a late winner.

Modric and Mariano were denied by Jan Oblak in a double chance for Real, while Courtois made good saves from Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa.

Five minutes before the end, Morata went clean through on a break and was brought down by Fede Valverde, who was shown a straight red card.

Valverde had earlier scuffed a header from close range, but watched on from the sidelines as Los Blancos claimed the trophy, which is a first for Zidane since his return to the club in March and a 10th overall for the Frenchman in his two spells in charge.
