One person has died after a speedboat carrying 15 passengers capsized in Bayelsa State. The tragic accident occurred on Saturday, August 24, in the Okubie Community River within the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The speedboat was en route from Yenagoa to Oporoma, the headquarters of Southern Ijaw LGA, when it overturned.
According to community sources, local residents quickly rescued 14 passengers from the water, but one individual drowned due to the rising water levels.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that this incident comes less than two weeks after a commercial boat explosion in the nearby Ezetu 1 community, which resulted in 20 fatalities.
The cause of the speedboat capsizing is still under investigation. Ipgansi Ogoniba, the state chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), confirmed the accident, stating that while 14 passengers were rescued, one person lost their life. Further details on the cause of the mishap are yet to be determined.
Police spokesperson ASP Musa Muhammed noted that he had no immediate information about the incident but promised to make inquiries and provide updates as they become available.
