Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has hailed D’Tigress for booking a spot in the 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
The Nigerian basketball team grabbed 74-59 win over Mali in the semi-final of the Pre-WOQT on Sunday in Maputo to secure their qualification for the WOQT.
Reacting to the team’s outstanding performance, the sports minister tweeted, “Congratulations to D’Tigress for overrunning Mali 74-59 to qualify for the next Olympics window.”

In a repeat of the 2019 AfroBasket Women Championship semi-final, where D’Tigress won 79-58 points, Hughley Otis’s side showed no signs of letting up on Sunday as they took their winning streak on the continent to 13 games.
They dominated the first-half and the third quarter, winning (14-11, 20-14, 25-14), but took their foot off the gas to allow Mali some breathing space in the fourth (15-20).
Nigeria will now compete in the 16-team WOQT from February 6 to 9, 2020.
Belgium (Ostend), China (Foshan), France (Bourges) and Serbia (Belgrade) have been awarded the hosting rights of the WOQTs.
The 16 teams will be split into four groups, who will then battle for spots at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
14 teams will vie for medals in the Women’s Basketball event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Host Japan and World Champion USA have qualified automatically.
