Unpaid Salaries: SSANU, NASU Direct Members To Commence Strike
SSANU and NASU have directed members to commence a series of protests and potentially a full-blown strike over unpaid salaries.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have instructed all branches to hold meetings on Monday to prepare for a one-day protest on Tuesday.
This will be followed by a national protest in Abuja on July 18, culminating in a full-blown strike.

This directive comes after a deadlocked meeting between the Federal Government, represented by the Ministry of Education, and the unions regarding their strike threat.
SSANU and NASU, under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), had given the government a two-week ultimatum to pay four months of withheld salaries, which President Bola Tinubu had approved for four university unions.
In 2022, SSANU, NASU, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) went on a prolonged strike, prompting then-President Muhammadu Buhari to implement a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.

While President Tinubu later granted amnesty for four months’ salary payment, only ASUU was paid in October last year, leaving the other three unions unpaid, causing tension and resentment in the universities.
The two-week ultimatum expired on July 4. Although the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, convened a meeting with SSANU and NASU to prevent the strike, no tangible progress was made.
The Minister promised to escalate the issue to a higher authority, possibly President Tinubu.
Frustrated by the lack of commitment from the government, NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, issued a circular to all branch chairmen. They stated that the government had not shown any serious intention to pay the withheld salaries or resolve other grievances.
The circular, titled “Outcome of the meetings held with the Minister of Education and the Minister of Labour and Employment: Directive to all branches of NASU and SSANU,” advised branches to fully participate in the scheduled protests.
The protests include:
– Holding a general meeting on Monday, July 8, 2024, to inform members about the government’s lack of responsiveness.
– Conducting a one-day protest on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at each branch, ensuring full participation and media coverage.
– Organizing a national protest in Abuja on Thursday, July 18, 2024, after which JAC will announce the start date for the strike.
