Stampede: Abia Govt Warns Against Spraying Money, Gifts in Crowds

The Abia State Government (ABSG) issued a stern warning on Sunday against actions that could trigger stampedes, particularly the spraying of cash and gift items at events with large crowds.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a press release titled “Public Safety Alert” and signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government expressed its condolences to the victims of recent stampedes in Oyo, Abuja, and Anambra. The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, extended his sympathy to the families and loved ones of those affected.

The statement highlighted a concerning rise in stampedes across the country, especially during the festive season, often resulting from inadequate crowd control by event organizers and participants. In light of this, the Governor called on event organizers to ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place to prevent any form of stampede that could lead to fatalities.

The government also issued a strong warning against unethical practices such as throwing or spraying money and gifts into crowds, noting that such actions have the potential to provoke dangerous stampedes.

Additionally, the statement urged event organizers requiring large crowds to consult with the Abia State Homeland Security or the Local Government Authority for guidance and support to ensure public safety.

The government further emphasized that it would take strict action against anyone or any group that disregards these safety directives.
