EKO HOT BLOG reports that the governor expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that steps have been taken to forestall further occurrences.
Makinde stated, “Earlier today, a stampede at the venue of a family event led to multiple loss of lives and injuries. This is a very sad day for us in Oyo State. We sympathise with the affected families whose joy has turned to mourning.”
The governor detailed measures taken to secure the venue, including deploying security agents to restore order and medical personnel to provide care. The event was immediately halted, and attendees escorted out of the premises.
While investigations continue, Makinde assured the public that those responsible would face the consequences. “Anyone directly or indirectly involved in this disaster will be held accountable. Please remain calm as security agencies investigate,” he said.
The funfair, reportedly organized by the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, was meant to host 5,000 children aged 0-13 years under the aegis of her Women In Need Of Guidance and Support (WINGS) foundation.
A social media post from Agidigbo FM prior to the event had promised exciting prizes, scholarships, and adequate security for all participants. However, the tragic turn of events has left the community mourning and seeking accountability.
Governor Makinde concluded his statement by offering prayers for the departed souls and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to securing justice for the victims and their families.
The tragedy has sparked nationwide condolences and renewed calls for stricter safety measures at large public events.
