UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is bracing for a showdown with his own party and trade unions as he prepares to defend controversial cuts to elderly benefits.
In a speech to the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday, Starmer will emphasize his commitment to economic stability, even if it means making unpopular decisions.
With Labour lawmakers and unions pushing back against the cuts, Starmer faces his biggest rebellion since taking office.
But he’s standing firm, warning that his government won’t compromise on economic stability.
“I do have to make clear, from a place of respect, that this government will not risk its mandate for economic stability, under any circumstances,” he’ll tell union leaders.
Starmer’s message to unions is clear: he’s willing to pass reforms like repealing anti-strike laws, but they must accept restraint on public sector pay and government spending.
“And with tough decisions on the horizon, pay will inevitably be shaped by that.”

The PM’s stance puts him at odds with Labour’s traditional allies, who are demanding higher pay and better benefits.
But Starmer’s determined to fix Britain’s economic woes, even if it means making tough choices.
He’s already hinted at tax rises and spending cuts to address the problems he blames on 14 years of Conservative misrule.
As the debate rages on, Starmer will call for unions and businesses to work together and accept trade-offs to help the economy recover.
“I make no apologies to those, still stuck in the 1980s, who believe that unions and business can only stand at odds, leaving working people stuck in the middle,” he’ll say.
The stakes are high, with the government estimating the cuts will save £1.5 billion a year.
But Starmer’s prepared to face the music, even if it means a rebellion from his own party. One thing’s certain – this is a make-or-break moment for his leadership.
