EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure, the state capital, the PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, said criminal elements now operate freely in many parts of the state without any resistance, with over 50 residents reportedly killed in the last one month alone.
“The party cannot, in all honesty, find reasons why such assailants could operate without any form of resistance for months running, in a state where there is said to be a valid government in place,” the statement read.
Igbabo cited Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which places the responsibility of securing the lives and property of citizens squarely on the shoulders of government. According to him, Governor Aiyedatiwa has failed woefully in this regard.
“It is heart-wrenching to note that in less than one month, about 50 persons have been gruesomely massacred in various settlements within the state,” Igbabo said. “These killings are one too many and indicative of helplessness, hopelessness, and a huge compromise on the part of those in power.”
The PDP further warned that unless urgent steps are taken, Ondo could degenerate into a slaughterhouse where bloodshed becomes normalised. The party therefore called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene by declaring a state of emergency in the state if the governor continues to show what it described as a lack of capacity to restore order.
“Under the prevailing circumstances, the party is humbly calling on the President to consider declaring a state of emergency if the state government continues to show a lack of capacity to halt the senseless killings before Ondo and the entire Southwest are turned into a slaughterhouse where innocent blood is shed without restraint,” the statement added.

The call for emergency intervention comes amid growing fear among residents and criticism from civil society groups over the state’s worsening security situation.
