- Social Media boycott campaign by leading sports organizations in UK is officially on
- Beginning from 3pm (UK time) on Friday April 30 to 11.59pm on Monday, May 3
The 81-hour boycott campaign was initiated by EPL Clubs but later joined by rugby, cricket and lawn tennis fraternity which are asking social media companies to up the game in eradicating social media hate.
The ‘Stop Online Abuse’ campaign will take place across the full fixture programmes in men’s and women’s professional games and will see the clubs switching off their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Weibo, WeChat and DouYin channels in China, Twitch, YouTube, LinkedIn and any other social media accounts.
As gathered by EKO HOT BLOG, Here is the communication from some of the clubs before the start of the campaign.
(1) A statement from the Premier League on its social media platforms stated that its social media accounts would be silent until Tuesday 4 May.
(2) Arsenal football club raised the concern that a boycott action in isolation will not eliminate the issue of online discriminatory abuse, but the campaign is aimed at emphasizing on social media companies to increase efforts in taming the hate.
The club’s chief executive, Vinai Venkatesham, said:
“We really cannot underestimate the impact that social media abuse can have on an individual.
“We need to come together to solve this because this is a moment in time. If we don’t make positive progress I really, really worry about the path we are heading on.”
(3) Chelsea Football Club through its official website said, “We want social media companies to do more to prevent online discriminatory abuse.”

(4) Manchester United: We join clubs, players and organizations in this weekend’s social media boycott. Abuse and discrimination of any kind are not welcome.
(5) Manchester City: This weekend we are coming together with other sports and organizations to boycott social media and demand change.
(6) A statement from Liverpool FC reads, “This weekend we stand together to start an important journey of change. We must fight discrimination in all its forms.”
(7) Everton: It’s time for change. Social media companies must do more to prevent online discriminatory abuse.
(8) Tottenham Hotspur website had this statement,” We now join teams across England in boycotting social media this weekend, in response to the ongoing discriminatory abuse received by players and others connected to football.”
