Stop IGP’s Tenure, Lawyer Asks Court
A legal practitioner known as Maxwell Okpara has demanded that a Federal High Court in Abuja stop Mohammed Adamu, from parading himself as the Inspector-General of Police.
He also asked the Court to restrain Adamu from exercising any form of command over officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.
The prayers are contained in the suit filed by the plaintiff at Abuja Division of the Federal High Court in which President Muhammadu Buhari, Adamu, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the Nigerian Police Council were listed as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th respondents respectively.
Recalling that Adamu’s tenure had elapsed on February 1, 2021, under the Police Act.2020, Okpara in the originating summons marked suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/106/2021.

The plaintiff wants the court to determine whether, by the provisions of Sections 215, 216 and section 7 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, Adamu could continue to function as IGP after February 1, 2021.
The plaintiff also wants the court to determine whether the failure of President Buhari and the Nigeria Police Council to appoint another IGP does not constitute an abdication of their duties.
He prayed the court to declare as illegal, null and void all actions taken by Adamu from the midnight of February 1, 2021.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has continued to report for duty despite attaining the statutory retirement age on Monday.
Findings by our correspondent showed that Adamu had been coming to the office for the past three days fueling speculations he might have secured tenure extension from the Presidency.
