Strike Payment SSANU NASU

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) disclosed on Saturday that the Federal Government has released only one out of four months’ worth of withheld salaries, despite a nationwide strike.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation confirmed the partial release, stating it had issued payments in response to the ongoing industrial action by university workers who had shut down academic operations due to unpaid salaries.

JAC had initiated the indefinite strike earlier in the week over delayed salaries, with approximately 98% of its members observing the action, affecting university administration across the country.

The unions have demanded the full release of their salaries before considering a return to work.

SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim highlighted that the strike includes not only SSANU and NASU members but also key university officials such as vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, whose unpaid salaries have further disrupted university activities.

In a conversation with Punch, Ibrahim confirmed that some union members have started receiving their payments but noted that the government has only issued one month of the owed four. “Yes, they paid one month out of four months,” he said, adding that “not everyone has received so far.”

The union leadership announced plans to meet and review the situation, maintaining their stance that university operations will remain at a standstill until the remaining salaries are disbursed in full.
