Student’s Death: Ogun Govt Shuts Down School, Suspends Staff
The Ogun State Government, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, has closed Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi, Obada, following the tragic death of Senior Secondary II student Monday Arijo, reportedly due to corporal punishment.
The school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has been suspended for previously permitting corporal punishment against state regulations, and the teacher involved in the incident was also arrested and suspended.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement on Tuesday, Lekan Adeniran, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abiodun, confirmed the closure, adding that the governor has ordered a panel to investigate the circumstances of Arijo’s death. “Those found responsible,” the governor stated, “will face the full consequences of the law.”
A delegation from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology visited Arijo’s family to express condolences and gather firsthand information. The delegation included the Director of Secondary and Higher Education, the Principals General of the Egba and Yewa Divisions, representatives from ANCOPPS, the Ogun State Trade Union Congress President, and the Ogun State ASSUS Chairman.
During the visit, they offered condolences, pledged support from the state, and assured the family of a detailed investigation to seek accountability and justice.
The Divisional Police Officer of Idi-Emi further assured the family of a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, emphasizing the commitment to student safety within the school.
In addition to condolences, a letter of sympathy and a ₦500,000 cash gift were presented to the family. The bereaved family expressed their profound grief and shock at the sudden loss of their child.
