SUBEB Chair Advocates Early Childhood Education

The Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King has advised parents to expose their children to basic education at an early stage, saying that early education for children makes it easy for them to comprehend and learn fast.

Speaking at Annual Seminar organized by Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Lagos State Chapter, with the theme: “Quality Basic Education: Pathway To Sustainable And Technological Driven Nation”, Alawiye-King said that several policies have been initiated by the Lagos State Government to encourage early education.

“You will agree with me that as the popular saying goes, ‘catch them young and watch them grow’ is more applicable to education and learning generally because the younger ones have the tendencies of learning fast”, he stated.

Some of the laudable initiatives by the state government to encourage early Childhood education, according to the Chairman, include the introduction of ECCDE (Early Childhood Caregiver Development Education) classes into public schools to introduce pupils to learning early enough from their formative years.

In the area of technological compliance, the SUBEB Chair added that plans are also being perfected to introduce digital learning into Lagos schools as well as the daily feeding programme for school pupils.

He revealed that he recently led a delegation of top government officials on a two-day working visit to Edo State in order to understudy their public school innovation towards upgrading the Primary Education System in Lagos.

According to him, “The visit afforded the Lagos State delegates the opportunity to understudy the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme that digititalises basic education learning, data and school management”.

He declared that all the demands of teachers in the State are being looked into as part of efforts to achieve a 21st-century education system that conforms to Local, National and International standard.

Also speaking at the occasion, Comrade Adedeji Oluwafemi, representative of the State Chairman of NUT commended the Executive Chairman of SUBEB for not only talking but taking action as seen in the proactive way he handled the conversion issue.

“It is gladdening to note that when the team of NUT met the Board, conversion was one of the issue presented to the board, as we speak, letters have already been sent to schools to compile the lists of those who indicated interest in the conversion exercise”, he said.
