NMDPRA is awaiting new reports to confirm the sulphur content of Dangote refinery diesel amid claims and counterclaims about fuel quality.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is anticipating new reports to verify the sulphur content of diesel produced by the Dangote refinery.
This follows Dangote’s rebuttal of claims regarding the alleged inferior quality of its fuel.

In an interview NMDPRA spokesman George Ene-Ita emphasized that the agency would not engage in a media dispute over the assertions made by NMDPRA Chief Executive Farouk Ahmed. Ahmed had claimed that Dangote’s diesel contains more sulphur than imported diesel.
Ene-Ita noted that 15 engineers and scientists embedded in the Dangote refinery are preparing a fresh report on the refinery’s sulphur content, expected to be released on Monday.
Ahmed had alleged that the diesel from the Dangote refinery has high sulphur content. Responding to accusations from Dangote that NMDPRA was permitting the importation of dirty fuel into Nigeria, Ahmed insisted that it was Dangote’s diesel that had higher sulphur levels.
He further stated that the refinery, although selling diesel and aviation fuel in Nigeria, was still in the pre-commissioning stage and had not yet been licensed.
Ahmed also warned that Nigeria should not rely solely on the Dangote refinery for its fuel supply.
He mentioned that the refinery had requested the regulator to halt import licences for other marketers, which he argued would create a monopoly and jeopardize energy security.
According to Ahmed, the quality of imported AGO (Automotive Gas Oil) in terms of sulphur is superior to that produced by Dangote and other modular refineries.
He claimed that while imported AGO meets the West African requirement of 50 ppm sulphur, the Dangote refinery and some modular refineries produce fuel with sulphur levels between 650 to 1,200 ppm.

During a tour of the Dangote refinery by members of the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Dangote maintained that its products are of superior quality. Lawmakers collected diesel samples from two well-known petrol stations and the Dangote refinery for testing.
The tests reportedly revealed that Dangote’s diesel had a sulphur content of 87.6 ppm, while the other samples had sulphur levels exceeding 1,800 ppm and 2,000 ppm respectively.
