Sunday Igboho Reportedly Poisoned In Benin Republic

  • Sunday Igboho has been reportedly poisoned in Benin Republic.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that popular Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been reportedly poisoned in the Benin Republic prison.

This online news platform reports that the self-proclaimed investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo, took to Twitter on Monday to claim that Sunday Igboho was ‘poisoned’.

She wrote, “#BREAKING Sunday lgboho has been poisoned in a Cotonou prison. His kidney function is deteriorating and Yoruba Nation is silent. Where is the cash donated for him? Cotonou authorities need to be questioned on what he consumed. He had a healthy kidney before arrest. #Kemitalks.”

This is coming after the Yoruba activist’s lawyer, Yomi Aliyu, on October 14, 2021, raised alarm over the health condition of Sunday Igboho.

The lawyer revealed that Igboho developed the illness in Benin Republic prison custody, adding that the Yoruba secessionist leader has also been critically ill and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Alliyu added that one of Igboho’s organs (Kidney) might have been affected as a result of injuries he sustained when he reportedly fell while attempting to escape from gunmen that invaded his Soka residence in Ibadan on July 1, this year.

EKOHOTBLOG recalls that Sunday Igboho, who is currently in a detention facility in the Benin Republic, was arrested alongside his wife on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.

Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was later released after the court found out that she had not committed any offence.

On his part, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

This came after the Beninese court ordered that Sunday Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.

The Yoruba rights activist, who is now seeking asylum in the Benin Republic, is facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence, and causing disunity in Nigeria.
