The Super Eagles were stunned 2-1 by 2026 World Cup qualifying rivals Rwanda in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo on November 18, 2024.
This was Rwanda’s first-ever victory over Nigeria at full international level, leaving the home side in disbelief after a tough battle.

Rwanda, on the other hand, ended the campaign with 8 points but were eliminated after Benin held Libya to a goalless draw in Tripoli, sending the Beninese team through to the Morocco 2025 AFCON based on a better goal difference.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the 59th minute, thanks to the brilliance of substitute Samuel Chukwueze. The winger sliced through the crowded Rwanda defense, expertly delivering a low shot that found the back of the net, beating goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.
However, Rwanda responded strongly. In the 72nd minute, Jummy Mutsinzi leveled the score with a powerful header that flew past Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.
Just three minutes later, Innocent Nshuti put the visitors ahead, sending the Super Eagles into shock and leaving them with no time to recover.
Despite the loss, the Super Eagles remain optimistic about their future World Cup campaign, while Rwanda’s narrow miss leaves them with a sense of pride in their performance.
