Super Eagles To Clash With Angola In AFCON Quarterfinals After Victory Over Cameroon
Eko Hot Blog reports the Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face Angola in the quarterfinals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The decisive match is scheduled to take place at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 6 pm.
Nigeria secured their spot in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought victory over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, thanks to Ademola Lookman’s brace in a thrilling encounter.
The Super Eagles, who remain unbeaten in the tournament, are now gearing up to face the Giant Sable Antelope of Angola.
Angolan forward, Jacinto Dala, expressed confidence in his team’s performance and their qualification for the quarterfinals. Angola recently defeated Namibia 3-0, with Dala being instrumental in all three goals. This marks Angola’s first appearance in the AFCON quarterfinals since their semi-final run in 2008.
“We had a good performance today. The team deserved this qualification, and I’m very happy we made it happen. I will say the commitment and the involvement of all the players helped me win this man of the match,” Dala commented.
Looking back at the 2019 AFCON, hosted by Egypt, the Super Eagles faced Cameroon in the Round of 16, securing a memorable 3-2 victory after coming from behind. Odion Ighalo’s brace (19th and 63rd minutes) and Alex Iwobi’s 66th-minute winner overcame Bahoken and N’Jia’s goals for Cameroon in the 41st and 44th minutes. The quarterfinals saw William Troost-Ekong sealing the deal with a last-minute winner (89th minute) against South Africa after a tense 1-1 draw.
As Nigeria prepares to face Angola in the AFCON 2023 Quarterfinals, football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate another thrilling encounter that could potentially propel the Super Eagles further in the tournament.
