The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to develop an independent super grid across the states to enhance power reliability.

Following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu disclosed that the President has directed the acceleration of repair efforts to restore electricity in northern Nigeria, which has recently experienced widespread blackouts due to vandalism of critical transmission lines.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Adelabu explained that the government is engaging contractors and financiers to establish 100 megawatts of solar power in each northern state, initially scaling from 50 to 100 megawatts.

He emphasized the need for a “super grid” as an alternative to the national grid, which would provide regional backup and minimize the impact of disruptions on other states.

“The world is moving. This is the 21st century, and we believe that the most effective way of supplying uninterrupted, stable, and reliable electricity to northern Nigeria is through a distributed power model,” Adelabu said.

He added that each of the 20 northern states would have an embedded utility solar source, making them insulated from one another.

“We have made progress with interested contractors and financiers ready to install 100 megawatts for each of the 20 northern states, initially at 50 megawatts and then upgraded to 100 megawatts,” he stated.

Adelabu further elaborated on the super grid concept: “If the national grid encounters problems, there will be an alternative grid for power transmission.

The world has moved beyond a central grid; grids must be regionalized. Each regional grid should be insulated so that a problem in one line does not affect others. We are working towards that. Until then, we will continue to manage the existing system and reduce the frequency of grid disturbances.”
