Usifo Ataga: IGP Orders Chidinma Ojukwu's Transfer To Abuja
  • The Lagos State Police Command has explained why it has not taken Chidinma Ojukwu, the alleged killer of Super TV CEO to court.

The Lagos State Police Command has explained why it has not taken Chidinma Ojukwu, the alleged killer of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to court.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday said Chidinma would be taken to court after the police had concluded their investigation

“We will take her to court when we finish the investigation; we are still investigating,” the police spokesperson said.

However, a Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Jiti Ogunye, has urged the police to get a remand order to justify Chidinma‘s continued detention.

Ogunye stated that the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State mandated the police to obtain a remand order to justify a suspect’s continued detention.

The lawyer, however, noted that sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution gave the police the right to detain a murder suspect.

He said, “The detention of this lady is not unconstitutional if a remand order has been obtained; if the remand order has not been obtained, the police will be expected to obtain a remand order to justify her detention.”

The Lagos-based lawyer expressed disappointment at how the police were handling the investigation, adding that granting the media access to interrogate her was unconstitutional.

Earlier, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said the management of the institution is following due process on the alleged murder case, adding that the university will not deny Chidinma no matter the travails.

Ogundipe made this known on Wednesday during a press conference on the 51st convocation ceremony of the institution.

The UNILAG VC further stated that the university is handling the administrative aspect of the issue since the case has become a national matter.
