Welcome to 2020 rainy season in Lagos and with the forecast of unprecedented rainfall this year, what we are witnessing in Surulere part of Lagos is a tip of the iceberg compared to what is expected across the state.
One of the major problems of surulere is flood and erosion. The city has experienced countless floods in the last few years. The 2012 experience is still fresh in mind.
Aside from surulere, many parts of Lagos like Lekki, Ajah, Bariga, and others are also battling with flood and erosion.
Lagos State is surrounded by water, this has been the major reason for flood in the megacity.
After the 2012 experience that led to the death of many and rendered thousands homeless, the then Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, constructed drainage and canals across the state. In spite of this, the problem is still lingering.
Some have attributed the flood and erosion in the city to poor planning and building of houses on the waterways.
Some also said overpopulation and the dropping of waste in gutters and canals are the major reason for this.
Some residents of Surulere in Lagos have taken to social media to raise an alarm of their community being overtaken by debris after Saturday’s night’s rain.
While some Twitter users called out the Lagos state government over alleged poor drainage and poor waste disposal system in the community, others lashed out at residents of the area for turning all the drainage system to the dustbin.
The task of nation-building is a collaborative venture between the citizens and the government. The government is expected to perform their roles which include the provision of amenities. The citizens, on the other hand, are all expected to be law-abiding
Some of the citizens, in an attempt to circumvent paying for waste evacuation services, have resorted into dumping their wastes in the canal.
Don’t blame the government, blame the irresponsible citizens.
