A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection to last week’s fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.

Luigi Mangione was apprehended on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania—about 280 miles west of New York City—after a customer recognized him from media reports.

Police reported that Mangione was in possession of a 3D-printed gun and a handwritten document allegedly outlining his “motivation and mindset.” He was initially arraigned in Pennsylvania on five charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification to police. He was denied bail at the hearing.

Shortly afterward, New York investigators formally charged Mangione with murder and additional firearm-related offenses.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back last Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where UnitedHealthcare was hosting an investors’ meeting. Police have stated that the attack was premeditated.

The murder prompted an extensive manhunt, utilizing New York City’s advanced digital surveillance network, police dogs, drones, and divers searching Central Park’s lake. Despite these efforts, Mangione’s capture came unexpectedly when a McDonald’s customer tipped off authorities.

Court documents revealed that Mangione initially presented officers with a fake New Jersey driver’s license bearing the name “Mark Rosario.” When questioned about recent travel to New York, he became visibly shaken and ultimately admitted his true identity.

Police found a 3D-printed pistol, a matching silencer, a loaded 9mm magazine, a U.S. passport, and $10,000 in cash—$2,000 of which was in foreign currency—in his backpack. Mangione disputed the cash amount during the Pennsylvania hearing.

Investigators noted that Mangione had not been on their list of suspects before his arrest.

During his court appearance in Pennsylvania, Mangione remained calm, dressed in jeans and a dark blue jersey, though he appeared visibly restrained with handcuffs on his wrists and ankles. He is currently being held in Pennsylvania as authorities prepare to transfer him to New York for further legal proceedings.

The motive for the killing remains under investigation.
