EKO HOT BLOG reports that a suspected herdsmen attack on an Internal Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Agan in the Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State has reportedly claimed many lives.
The attack took place on Friday, according to a spokesman of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Sewuese Anene, who confirmed the incident in a chat with Channels Television.
Although the casualty figure is yet to be determined, Anene disclosed that many residents of the camp were killed during the attack. She added that a response team had already been dispatched to the area to calm down the situation.
In a bid to clarify what happened, the state Commissioner of Police, Wale Abasse, is expected to visit the scene of the attack early in the morning. The attack came after the killing of a traditional ruler in Apa Local Government Area of Benue earlier in the week, along with several others.
The attackers then moved to the Otukpo Local Government Area on Wednesday, killing 46 people, including a 33-year-old son of the local government chairman.
The latest attack has further fueled concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the state, which has been a hotbed of clashes between farmers and herders. The Benue State government has been grappling with the challenge of securing its residents from banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminal activities.
