Suspected Yahoo Boys Open Fire on EFCC Officers

A tragic incident occurred on Friday in the Onitsha area of Anambra State when a group of suspected Internet fraudsters, known as Yahoo boys, ambushed and opened fire on operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Eko Hot Blog gathered that the attack resulted in the death of an EFCC officer, while another was left critically injured.

The operatives, who were on a mission to apprehend the cyber criminals, had travelled from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu.

During the confrontation, the Yahoo boys immediately opened fire upon noticing the presence of the EFCC agents.

In addition to the EFCC casualties, several bystanders sustained various injuries as they scrambled for safety during the unexpected shootout.

According to a source who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the incident, the Yahoo boys ambushed the EFCC operatives on Friday morning, leading to the fatal shooting of one officer and the critical injury of another.

“In the process, they shot one officer dead instantly, while another who was critically injured was rushed to a nearby hospital and still remained in critical condition at the hospital as of Friday night.”

The deceased said to be an assistant superintendent, had recently completed a promotional examination. His identity is being withheld pending official notification of his family.

When contacted, the Anambra State Police Command Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development, adding that investigation has commenced.
