SWAT For SARS So Soon? It Is Hasty And Tactless, Mr IGP Muhammad Adamu
By Gboyega Akosile
The world abhors vacuum, no doubt, but I find it indecent haste to have quickly formed a Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT) so soon after disbanding Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).
Why the haste in announcing a new police outfit which the ENDSARS protesters have indigeniously but justifiably described as a new name for SARS.
The IGP is a likeable police top brass who impressed me so much on the two occasions we had cause to meet and exchange banter in Abuja. He is my ideal cop – smart, suave and with a flat belly that made me remember my boyish ramrod stature of the 70s !
But in moving quickly to announce a SWAT, which I want to say is bloody twat, it appears my own IGP, Muhammad Adamu is not reading the body language of President Muhammad Buhari and his poster-boy Governor Sanwoolu of Lagos well.
First, the protesters, even after the presidential directive disbanding SARS and Sanwoolu’s risky but patriotically commendable gesture of going into the lion’s den of protesters twice in Lekki and Ikeja within 24 hours, were still spoiling for more action and threatening to continue the disruption of traffic all over the place.
And, just as people of my mind-set were about to start questioning the protesters motive and asking what else do they want, after the equally commendable presidential intervention, the IGP unwittingly provided a justification for the protesters threatened continuation by this absolutely hasty establishment if a SWAT, this twatt and provocative of an action!
The fire ignited by the protesters was yet to be finally doused before the IGP fresh statement which has the potential of infuriating the protesters further and worsening the already tense situation.
By all means, the Police in a democracy have a job to do in the maintainance of law and order in a civil manner. And if the IGP restrains himself from forming a new security outfit to combat banditry and other violent crimes in place of the terribly abused SARS, no harm could have befallen the nation for now.
A good intention has been soiled by his IGP’s hasty announcement on a SWAT. He has the knowledge and wisdom to understand my drift and withdraw that announcement, for normalcy to return to the land. Two or three weeks for the twin committees set up to look into the grievances of the protesters to do their work of police reform is not too much; while also appealing to the protesters to honour Mr President and Governor Sanwoolu and sheath their sword by withdrawing from the streets.
