An investigation into alleged rape and sexual assault in Stockholm, reportedly involving Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, has been closed due to a lack of sufficient evidence, the Swedish prosecutor announced on Thursday.
The 25-year-old French football star, widely regarded as one of the sport’s biggest names, was in Stockholm from October 9 to 11 with a group of companions after not being selected for France’s Nations League match during that period.

On October 15, Sweden’s prosecution authority confirmed it was investigating an alleged incident at a luxury Stockholm hotel on October 10, though it did not publicly name the suspect.
However, prominent Swedish media outlets, including Aftonbladet, Expressen, and public broadcaster SVT, reported Mbappé as the individual under investigation.
The case has now been officially closed, with authorities citing insufficient evidence to proceed further.
“My assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed,” prosecutor Marina Chirakova said in a statement that also did not mention Mbappe by name.
Chirakova said the suspect had “not been notified of suspicion of a crime”.
Mbappe’s lawyer said in October that he was “shocked” to see his name linked to the investigation.
Speaking for the first time about the case on Sunday, he told French television show Clique he was “not involved”.
“I haven’t received anything, no summons… I’m not involved,” he said.
According to Aftonbladet, Kylian Mbappé and his entourage enjoyed dinner at a restaurant one evening before heading to a nightclub. The following day, on October 12, a complaint was filed after the alleged victim sought medical attention.
Expressen reported that police had seized several items as evidence, including women’s underwear, a pair of black trousers, and a black top. Photographs showed officers leaving the hotel with brown evidence bags.
Mbappé has faced challenges this season since transferring from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid, struggling to reach his usual high form. However, he played a key role in Madrid’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta on Tuesday, scoring a goal that helped revive their Champions League hopes.
Mbappé, along with Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham, found the back of the net in Bergamo, securing Madrid’s progress with nine points from six matches, moving up to 20th place in the Champions League table. A loss would have put them in danger of dropping out of the playoff spots.
Mbappé, one of the most sought-after talents in world football, rose to global prominence when he won the 2018 World Cup with France as a teenager. He also scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final, where France narrowly lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout. At PSG, he formed a star-studded trio alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar.
