EKO HOT BLOG reports that alongside his British-born wife, Asma al-Assad, and their three children, the family sought refuge in Russia, as confirmed by Syrian state television.
For several years, it had seemed that the civil war in Syria was effectively winding down, with Assad’s regime regaining control over most urban areas with support from Russia, Iran, and Iranian-backed militias like Hezbollah. However, pockets of the country remained beyond government control, and the frontlines had largely remained static.
On November 27, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, along with allied groups, launched an offensive aimed at “deterring aggression,” accusing the Syrian government and its Iranian-backed militias of intensifying attacks on civilians. This escalation occurred at a time when Assad’s government was already severely weakened by years of conflict, sanctions, and internal corruption.
Meanwhile, key allies Russia and Iran were distracted by other military engagements. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group, had recently suffered setbacks due to Israeli operations in Lebanon, including the killing of high-ranking Iranian military leaders in Syria.
The ongoing war in Ukraine has also stretched Russia’s resources thin, further leaving Assad’s forces vulnerable without the usual support from his allies.
