Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled a newly constructed mid-level food agro-hub at Idi-Oro in the Mushin area of the state.
The governor inaugurated the facility on Sunday, according to his Special Assistant on New Media, Jubril Gawat.
Eko Hot Blog had earlier reported that Sanwo-Olu was set to inaugurate the project, which is aimed at addressing food insecurity in Lagos.
In a series of tweets on his X handle on Sunday, Gawat said the food agro-hub will help to tackle problems associated with post-harvest losses, inflation, carbon footprint and traffic congestion.
“The launch of a new way of food distribution in Lagos with the commissioning of the middle-level food agro-hub will see to the tackling of problems associated with post-harvest losses, inflation, carbon footprint and traffic congestion,” the governor’s media aide wrote.
“The food Agro-hub is sitting on 6400 square meters of land, has adequate parking (3,017sqm) space to accommodate trailers and vehicles, and has centralized wet and dry storage areas for bulk buying.”
Gawat further stated that Sanwo-Olu revealed that there will be replication of the agro-hub in three other locations in the state.
He wrote, “For People asking, Governor of Lagos State, Mr #jidesanwoolu says 3 other places have been identified to replicate this newly constructed middle-level food Agro-hub, located at Idi-Oro in Mushin Local Government Area: AJAH, AGEGE and ABULE ADO.”
Earlier on Saturday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, said the establishment of the middle-level food hub in Idi-Oro, Mushin, is confirmation of the state government’s solution and strategy that harnesses its comparative advantage as a market-state and caters to the key stumbling blocks affecting food security – market information, intermediary integration and contractual certainty.
She stated that Nigeria’s markets are plagued by poor integration, in the face of growing food demands from a burgeoning population.
“Given the inability of markets to efficiently move food from surplus to deficit regions, poor integration has a major effect on both farmer incomes and on food security, hence the need for food systems transformation as exemplified by Lagos State Government’s middle-level agro hub,” the commissioner said.
“The launch of a new way of food distribution in Lagos with the commissioning of the middle-level food agro-hub will see to the tackling of problems associated with post-harvest losses, inflation, carbon footprint and traffic congestion.
“The middle-level food agro hub is located in the heart of Mushin, Idi-oro, with the modern facility sitting on 6400 square meters of land, has adequate parking (3,017sqm) space to accommodate trailers and vehicles, and has centralized wet and dry storage areas for bulk buying.”
