  • Deputy Governor urges focus on poverty and insecurity over tax reforms.
  • Kano highlights achievements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure amidst economic challenges.

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has expressed strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, labeling them as “ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to the unity of the country.”

Represented by his deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, during the 2025 New Year celebration in Kano, Yusuf stressed that the reforms would aggravate economic challenges and negatively impact the welfare of Nigerians, particularly in the North.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Yusuf urged the Presidency to prioritize addressing hyperinflation, poverty, and insecurity over introducing tax reforms, which he argued would only deepen the economic hardship faced by citizens.

He lauded Kano residents for their resilience amid tough economic conditions and highlighted his administration’s strides in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and foreign scholarship programs.

The governor also referenced the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024 that confirmed him as the duly elected leader of Kano State, urging unity and continued support for his administration’s developmental agenda.

Meanwhile, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, in his New Year message, called for institutionalized public accountability as a prerequisite for any tax reform.

He emphasized that Nigerians deserve efficient use of taxpayers’ money and warned against introducing reforms that could exacerbate the population’s hardship.

Azinge further stated that Nigeria must create a buoyant economy capable of addressing internal issues and giving hope to the younger generation.

He criticized the misuse of tax revenue and called for transparency to restore public trust.

On the legal dispute surrounding his ascension to the throne, Azinge vowed to contest all cases in court, dismissing the claims against his legitimacy as spurious.

Both leaders have highlighted the need for policies that prioritize citizens’ welfare over burdensome reforms, urging the government to adopt a people-centered approach.
