Tax Increases Will Make President Tinubu Look Bad – Ndume Tells FIRS

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the National Assembly, has urged Minister of Finance Wale Edun, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and other economic managers to stop misleading President Bola Tinubu.

Ndume made this statement in response to the Federal Government’s plan to increase the country’s tax regime. He expressed concern that these economic managers are attempting to make President Tinubu appear unfavorable to the public by proposing a tax hike.

In a statement, Ndume said, “Allow Nigerians to have enough blood in their body before you start asking for donations.

I am not suggesting that people shouldn’t pay taxes, but you shouldn’t impose taxes on those who are struggling to survive. You are paying a minimum wage of N70,000, and suddenly the price of fuel rises to N1,000.

“If you do the math, it means you could have continued paying me N30,000 and kept the price of fuel at N100. It’s like giving with one hand and taking away with the other. The tax authority should focus on those who can afford to pay taxes.

“Many people are evading property taxes. Banks, for example, are making substantial profits yet are not contributing their fair share in taxes. They are also collecting taxes on money transfers.”
