A Lagos teacher, Stella Nwadigbo, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, following accusations of assaulting a three-year-old pupil at Christ Mitot School in Ikorodu.
Nwadigbo, who resides in Isawo, Ikorodu, was arraigned on Thursday before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The prosecution, led by ASP Raji Akeem, stated that the incident and was captured on camera.
The footage reportedly shows the teacher slapping and striking the young boy while attempting to teach him how to write numerals.
The alleged offence contravenes Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
These laws pertain to acts causing grievous bodily harm and child cruelty.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate O. Kushanu granted the defendant bail set at ₦200,000, with two sureties required to provide the same amount.
The court emphasized that the sureties must have verified addresses and strong ties to Lagos to ensure compliance.
The court adjourned the case until February 18 for further proceedings, where both sides are expected to present evidence.
The incident has sparked public outrage and concern over the treatment of children in schools, with many calling for stricter monitoring and enforcement of child protection laws.
