Tears As Woman Killed During Yoruba Nation Rally Is Laid To Rest

Jumoke Oyeleke, the 25-year-old woman killed by stray bullets during the Yoruba Nation rally on July 3, has been buried.
Jumoke Oyeleke was buried today, August 20, at the Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos.
Recall that Jumoke, a sachet water seller, was killed after during found the rally held at the Gani Fawehinmi Park on July 3.
Policemen in a bid to restore calm stormed the venue firing tear gas canisters and shooting in a bid to scatter the protesters calling for the establishment of a Yoruba Nation.
A stray bullet was said to have hit Oyeleke in the process.
However, the police has denied responsibility for her death, saying its officers did not fire a single live bullet at the rally.
The Lagos State Government charged a Yoruba Nation protester, Tajudeen Bakare, aka Ogboni Chief, for Oyeleke’s death but the charge was later withdrawn for lack of evidence.
A candlelight procession was thereafter held in July in Oyeleke’s honour.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos Governor had ordered an investigation into her death.
At the sitting of the coronary inquest held at a Magistrate Court in Ogba, Ifeoluwa Oyeleke, the deceased’s mother and boss, appeared as witnesses.
Jumoke’s mother told the chief magistrate, M.K.O Fadeyi that she learnt of her daughter’s death while going home in a bus.

” I was coming from Ikeja, I overheard passengers saying an innocent lady in her shop was gunned down by the police. I never knew it was my daughter,” she said.
The sitting was adjourned to September 6.
