Teenager Gout Gout Breaks 200m Record, Becomes Fastest 16-Year-Old In History

Australian teenage prodigy Gout Gout has etched his name into the history books by becoming the fastest 16-year-old ever over 200 meters.

At the Australian Schools Championships in Brisbane on Saturday, Gout clocked an impressive 20.04 seconds, breaking the national record set by Peter Norman when he won silver at the 1968 Olympics.

This remarkable time makes Gout the fastest 16-year-old in history and the second fastest under-18 athlete, trailing only Erriyon Knighton, who set a record of 19.84 seconds at 17 in 2021.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Gout remarked.

“Right now I can’t process it, but I guess tonight when I go to bed, I’ll think about it. These are adults. And me, I’m just a kid, and I’m running them (down).

“I’ve been chasing that record, but I didn’t think it would come this year. I thought it would come maybe next year, the year after that.”

Gout, who will turn 17 later this month, recorded the fourth-fastest 100m time by an Australian, clocking 10.04 seconds on Friday.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Gout’s remarkable speed and running technique have drawn comparisons to Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt.

According to Australian broadcaster ABC, Gout is set to travel to the United States next month for training with Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles.

Born to migrants from war-torn South Sudan, Gout resides in Ipswich, a suburb of Brisbane.

The 2032 Olympics will take place in Brisbane, by which time Gout will be 24 years old.
