Why We Must Increase Call, Data Tariffs In 2025 - Telecoms Operators
Telecommunications operators in Nigeria have reiterated the urgent need for an upward review of tariffs for calls, data, and other services in 2025 to ensure the survival of their businesses.
The operators argue that current tariffs are unsustainable due to prevailing economic challenges. This follows reports that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is reviewing operators’ requests for approval to raise charges for calls, SMS, and internet bundles.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, made this known during an end-of-year industry stakeholders’ event in Lagos. In his address titled “Before the Final Call: Telecom as Sector Under Siege,” Adebayo warned that the industry is on the brink of collapse unless urgent interventions are made.
“This is not a time for further deliberation or delayed decisions. The survival of the telecom sector demands immediate and bold reforms for its sustainability. Our tariffs must be reviewed to reflect the economic realities of delivering telecom services at a minimum for industry sustainability. Without this, operators cannot continue to guarantee service availability,” Adebayo stated.
He highlighted the severe challenges facing the telecom sector, including rising operational costs, surging energy prices, relentless inflation, and volatile exchange rates. Despite these obstacles, tariffs have remained stagnant, placing operators in a precarious financial situation.
“As we reflect on the end of 2024, there is a need to issue an urgent and critical call to action for the future of our telecommunications industry,” Adebayo added. “If immediate and decisive action is not taken, the hope for a better 2025 will remain just that—a hope.”

Adebayo urged stakeholders to act swiftly to address the challenges, warning that delays could lead to irreparable damage to the sector.
“The time for action is now. Let us not wait until it is too late. ALTON stands ready to work with all stakeholders to ensure the survival and prosperity of this sector,” he concluded.
