EKO HOT BLOG reports that ahead of the upcoming Osun 2022 governorship election, the below are ten things Nigerians should know about it.

1. The 2022 Osun State gubernatorial election will take place on July 16, 2022, to elect the Governor of Osun State.

2. The primaries are scheduled for between February 16 and March 12.

3. Incumbent APC Governor Gboyega Oyetola is eligible for reelection and his official campaign announcement is pending.

4. There are rumors of a rift between Governor Oyetola and former Governor Rauf Aregbesola that could lead to Oyetola failing to be renominated.

 

5. The Osun APC has been divided into two. There are caucus within the party in the state. The Osun Progressive (TOP) members who are members of the party and loyalists to Aregbesola while the Ilerioluwa group who are loyalists to Oyetola.

6. In November 2021, the APC announced that its primary will be held on March 5, 2022 with the expression of interest form costing ₦2.5 million and the nomination form costing ₦20 million; a 50% discount would be provided to women candidates and candidates with disabilities.

7. The PDP had said it will begin sales of expression of interest and nomination forms for Osun State Governorship Election, on Nov. 22 and to close on Dec. 10.

8. The major Osun APC governorship aspirants are; Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun, and others who are yet to declared their ambitions.

9. The major Osun PDP governorship aspirants are; Ademola Adeleke, Deji Adeleke, Akin Ogunbiyi, Fatai Akinbade, Ayoade Adewopo, Oluwole Oke, Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, Prince Dotun Babauemi and others who are yet to declare their ambitions.

9. The crisis rocking the Osun State Chapter of PDP has gotten messier as younger brother to the candidate of the party in the 2018 governorship election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, Deji, obtained nomination form.

10. The Governor of Osun State is elected using a modified two-round system. To be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive the plurality of the vote and over 25% of the vote in at least two-thirds of state local government areas. If no candidate passes this threshold, a second round will be held between the top candidate and the next candidate to have received a plurality of votes in the highest number of local government areas.
