The decision comes amidst concerns over school safety and efforts to provide districts with more options to protect students.
Governor Lee emphasized the importance of empowering districts with tools to ensure the safety of children within their schools.
“What’s important to me is that we give districts tools and the option to use a tool that will keep their children safe in their schools,” Lee stated during a news conference.
The bill, which passed the Republican-controlled state House and Senate, requires staff members interested in carrying concealed handguns to undergo a minimum of 40 hours of specialized training in school policing annually.
Additionally, they must obtain written authorization from law enforcement.
However, the decision faced criticism, particularly from Democrats who question the efficacy of arming teachers.
State Representative Bo Mitchell expressed his dissent on the House floor, referencing a previous school shooting in Nashville.
“This is our reaction to teachers and children being murdered in a school.
Our reaction is to throw more guns at it. What’s wrong with us?” Mitchell remarked.
Despite the controversy, Tennessee joins at least 26 other states that have enacted similar legislation allowing teachers or staff to possess guns on school grounds, albeit with certain exceptions.
