EKO HOT BLOG reports that Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, has said that the next three fixtures will be crucial in defining their season after their 2-0 win over Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva both scored for the reigning Premier League champions, keeping them on track with league leaders Arsenal.
Guardiola expressed his satisfaction with the victory and praised his team’s first-half performance before explaining the tactical switch he made during the game:
“We played a really good first half and after the game went up and down we put Bernardo on to make our possessions longer, we needed to keep more of the ball. It’s part of his intuition to do high pressing…”
He went on to describe the win as an “incredibly good result” for the team because it was a “tricky game.” Guardiola then focused on the upcoming fixtures and their importance: “Now we have three games in different competitions before the international break which will define our season.”
Manchester City’s next game is against Crystal Palace in the Premier League next Saturday, before they host RB Leipzig in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on March 14. They then face Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-finals on March 18.
Guardiola knows that his team needs to secure victories in these three games to keep their hopes alive for the Premier League and Champions League titles, as well as their hopes for a domestic cup.
With Arsenal currently leading the Premier League, City needs to be in top form to stay in the race for the title. Additionally, they need to win the Champions League to have a shot at a successful season.
