Lampard spoke to reporters on Tuesday and praised the young midfielder’s ability. “For a young player to achieve what he’s achieved in this footballing year is amazing,” Lampard said. “It’s a difficult moment to come to the club, but it’s a challenge that will make him better. He is the future of Chelsea.”
Fernandez has struggled to adapt to the Premier League since his arrival in January. He has made eight appearances in all competitions, with just two starts. The midfielder has been used mainly as a substitute and has failed to make a significant impact.
Despite his slow start at Stamford Bridge, Lampard believes Fernandez has the potential to become a star player for Chelsea. The young midfielder is highly rated in his native Spain and was tipped for a bright future before his move to Benfica.
Chelsea’s co-owner, Toddy Boehly, was willing to pay a significant fee to bring Fernandez to Stamford Bridge. The midfielder was seen as a long-term investment for the club and a player who could potentially replace the ageing N’Golo Kante in midfield.
