EKO HOT BLOG reports that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued an apology to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard for comments he made during a press conference last week.
The apology comes after Guardiola referenced Gerrard’s infamous slip in a match against Chelsea in 2014.
Speaking to reporters, Guardiola expressed regret for his “unnecessary stupid comments” about Gerrard and stated that he was “ashamed” of his remarks.
The City boss added that Gerrard was a player he greatly admired and respected, acknowledging the significant impact he had on English football during his playing days.
Guardiola stated:
“I apologise to Steven Gerrard for my unnecessary stupid comments about him. He knows how I admire him and his career, what he has done for this country where I am living and training. I am ashamed of myself for what I said because he doesn’t deserve it.”
The Manchester City manager went on to explain that he believed he was defending his club, but admitted that he had not represented them well by making the comments about Gerrard.
He added:
“I truly believe my comments about defending my club but I didn’t represent my club well putting his name in these stupid comments. I am so sorry to him, his kids, wife, family. It was stupid.”
Gerrard, who is currently the manager of the Scottish club Rangers, has yet to respond to Guardiola’s apology. However, it is clear that the City boss holds the former Liverpool captain in high regard and regrets any offense caused by his remarks.
Steven Gerrard had quite a successful career at Liverpool, contrary to what most will assume of the former Aston Villa manager, but one moment that seems to have come to define his career is the one slip against Jose Mourinh’s Chelsea side in 2014 that cost the Reds the league title with roughly 4 games to go.
Pep Guardiola is one manager never known to stir much of a conversation from his press conferences, but over some time, a lot of quotes have been gotten from him that tend to be quite offensive to a few, if not many.
Steven Gerrard hasn’t responded to the jibe and is yet to respond to the apology.
