The Imo State PCC Sex Tape & The Lost Mettle Of Nigerian Politicians

On Tuesday January 12th, 2021 social media became awash with a viral video of Imo State Public Procurement Commissioner (PCC), Chief Willy Amadi who for some inexplicable reason decided to film an episode of a semi-sex carnival involving himself and a number of yet to be identified females.

As expected, social media spaces came a tad close to explosion in the light of this shocking graphic images of a public servant who had debased himself to a degree of debauchery deemed unacceptable from a public figure of Chief Amadi’s standing.

In the video, Chief Amadi could be seen filming the semi-sex carnival via the front camera of his mobile device while some unidentified persons appeared to be making out in what seemed like an executive suite of a hotel.

In not so many words, the Imo State PCC has effectively underlined a perennial problem in Nigeria’s political landscape, which is a brazen lack of leadership scruples. If bad leadership is at the heart of Nigeria’s present predicaments, the honourable commissioner has just produced a first-class display of this reality, consequently proving the mettle, or lack thereof, possessed by the Nigerian political class.

Over the past days there have been many questions surrounding this utterly reproachable act by the Public Procurement Commissioner, many of which revolves around why Chief Amadi, who is a principal officer of the state would condescend to not only engaging in such level of debauchery, but to also film the episode himself.

During the hey days of the Classical Greek Civilization, Plato, in his Republic had argued that political power should only be lodged with the Aristocrats, who according to him had the requisite sagacity to manage political power and bring about the needed progress in the society. While there had been many contentions against the famous philosopher’s ideology, such flagrant act of indiscretion by a high-ranking government functionary once again serves as a cautionary tale that leadership is by no means an all comers affair and should never be conferred on persons lacking in simple decisional qualms like Chief Amadi.

Also surprising about this episode is the fact that, at a time when many at home and abroad continue to fall to the sword of the deadly coronavirus, the PCC has barefacedly opted to put himself in the crosshairs of this deadly virus by indulging in a sex carnival with a bunch of strangers at a time when caution has been mooted as an essential factor in curbing the spread of this lethal pathogen.

Indeed, there is no gainsaying in the fact that one can infer the sordid nature of this act by Chief Willy Amadi a thousand ways to Sunday, but then, the Public Procurement Commissioner does not stand alone as far as the league of shoddy politicians go. Only recently, the Ogun State Commisioner for Environment, Abiodun Abdul-Balogun was accused by 16 year-old Barakat Melojuekun of sexual harassment, a tale which was told with mathematical exactitude by the teenager but ultimately retracted days later owing to suspicions one cannot dare to say at this time.

While we may not necessarily need to lean towards Plato’s recommendations for the ideal politician as contained in his earlier mentioned manifesto, ‘Republic’, that new Nigeria of our dreams will continue to exist in the surreal until such sentiments of prebendalism and nepotistic tendencies is stamped out of the political appointment process; and of course, a public official who possesses the gall to organize and film a sex carnival completely reeks of a political appointee whose credentials is more a function of his friendship with his political principal than his ability to do the job.’

Like many other cases of sexual indiscretion involving Nigerian politicians, this unsightly imbroglio involving the PCC will ultimately be eroded by the mists of time. But then, what usually remains indelible is the reality of the common man, whose fortune remains inextricably bound to the quality of leadership offered by the guys upstairs; and, with leaders terribly lacking in very primal and fundamental leadership qualities, the chances of having that new Nigeria of our dreams appears to be slim to nonexistent.
