A crackdown on reckless driving is what Lagos residents can expect next from its government following road accidents in the state caused by reckless truck drivers.
-
As explained by Perm-Sec Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Lagos government plans to arrest and prosecute road offenders soon.
-
The truck incidents in Ojuelegba, Ikotun, Odoyalaro and Abule-Egba seem to be the last straw for the government, with deterrents in place.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos State Government has vowed to crack down on the owners and drivers of articulated vehicles for their reckless and negligent behaviour on the roads.
In a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the government has announced plans to arrest and prosecute those who violate the provisions of the State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
The move comes after a series of truck accidents in Ojuelegba, Ikotun, Abule-Egba, and Odoyalaro (Maryland) Bridge, which have resulted in the loss of lives and injury to many innocent citizens. Investigations into these incidents have revealed that the drivers were responsible for the accidents due to their reckless behaviour.

The State Government is not taking these accidents lightly and has warned that the full wrath of the law will be inflicted upon the culprits. The law stipulates that anyone who drives a commercial vehicle that does not conform to the provisions of the law is committing an offence and is liable to the penalties stated in Section 18 (2) of the law.
Furthermore, if the driver of the vehicle is not the owner, the owner will also be held responsible in accordance with Section 18 (3).
The Permanent Secretary has also assured the public that enforcement strategies will be put in place to monitor the operations of articulated vehicles on the state’s roads. He has called upon all relevant stakeholders to cooperate in the implementation of these measures in order to enhance road safety and prevent unwarranted deaths.
In a show of support for the families affected by these accidents, Toriola has pledged that justice will be served. This announcement comes after a tragic incident on January 29, 2023, in which 9 passengers were killed when a 20-foot container-laden truck fell on a commercial bus in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos State.
