EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a solemn address delivered on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine made a resolute commitment to the Ukrainian people, declaring that Russian forces would be vanquished in Ukraine, paralleling the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.
Standing in front of a war memorial, Zelensky commemorated Victory in Europe Day and affirmed his determination to confront the aggression emanating from Moscow.
Zelensky announced that he had submitted a bill to the parliament seeking to officially commemorate World War II in Ukraine on May 8 and to celebrate Europe Day on May 9, thereby creating further distance from Moscow’s narrative.
The Ukrainian president accused the Kremlin of being responsible for acts of aggression, annexation, occupation, deportation, as well as mass murder and torture.
Drawing historical parallels, Zelensky proclaimed,
“All the old evil that modern Russia is bringing back will be defeated just as Nazism was defeated. Just as we destroyed evil together then, we are destroying a similar evil together now.”
He expressed unwavering confidence that Ukraine, alongside the free world, would emerge victorious against the encroaching threat.
The President’s address followed an incident earlier that day, during which Ukrainian forces claimed to have successfully downed 35 attack drones launched by Russia.
The drone strikes resulted in five people sustaining injuries in Kyiv. Additionally, in the southern region of Odessa, officials reported an airstrike targeting a warehouse, leaving three individuals injured.
Zelensky’s strong rhetoric came on the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender to the Allied forces on May 8, 1945, and a day ahead of Victory Day celebrated in Moscow, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph in World War II.
By emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to commemorating the historic victory in Europe and asserting its distinct position, Zelensky aimed to highlight the nation’s determination to confront the current Russian threat and uphold the principles of freedom and peace.
As tensions escalate between Ukraine and Russia, President Zelensky’s impassioned words underscore the resolve of the Ukrainian people to defend their sovereignty and preserve the values cherished by the free world.
