Liverpool wasted no time in making their mark on the game, as Diogo Jota opened the scoring with a well-taken goal, followed by a Roberto Firmino masterclass just 25 minutes into the first half. This remarkable display from Firmino would mark his final goal for Liverpool, leaving a lasting memory for the club and its supporters.
However, the Reds were unable to maintain their two-goal advantage, as defensive lapses allowed Southampton to mount a comeback, leveling the score before halftime. It was a frustratingly familiar sight for Liverpool, whose defensive vulnerabilities have been a recurring theme throughout the season.
The second half brought even more calamity for Liverpool, as Southampton remarkably netted two quick goals within minutes, taking an unexpected 4-2 lead against their illustrious opponents. The spectacle unfolded as a relegated Southampton side created wonders on the final matchday of the 2022/23 season.
Nevertheless, Liverpool had one more twist in store, demonstrating their resilience and fighting spirit. Substitute Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota struck in rapid succession, finding the net within two minutes of each other, bringing the game level before the final whistle.
Meanwhile, in another captivating encounter, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea showcased an impressive performance against a spirited Newcastle United side. The Blues fought back from a goal down, eventually securing a draw at full time. Anthony Gordon and an own goal by Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier, who inadvertently deflected Raheem Sterling’s weak shot into his own net, accounted for Chelsea’s goals.
Newcastle United had little reason to fret, as they finished the season in a comfortable 4th place, guaranteeing their spot in the upcoming Champions League campaign.
Elsewhere in the league, Everton secured their promotion with a narrow 1-0 victory against AFC Bournemouth. Abdoulaye Doucoure’s stunning strike proved to be the decisive goal, propelling Everton into next season’s Premier League campaign.
Regrettably, Leicester City were the victims of Everton’s triumph against AFC Bournemouth as despite their 2-1 victory against West Ham United, their 7 year stay in the premier league comes to an abrupt end.
Leicester City goes down together with Leeds United who fell to Tottenham Hotspur in a 4-1 humiliation.
