Kano Government Denies Stalling Doguwa's Trial
  • Majority house of Reps leader facing multiple charges of illegal possession of firearms and conspiracy has been granted bail of N500 million naira.

  • However stringent rules govern the bail terms as the politician has to provide sureties of an Emir and a civil servant.

  • In addition, Doguwa’s international passport is to be confiscated by the authorities.

 

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, who is facing charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, culpable homicide, and breach of public peace, has been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Kano.

During his arraignment at Kano Magistrate court 54, Doguwa had pleaded not guilty.

His counsel, Nuraini Jimoh, SAN, argued that his client is presumed to be innocent pursuant to the provision of Section 35 (6) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended) and requested that the defendant be granted bail.

On Monday afternoon, Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunus presided over the bail hearing and granted bail to Doguwa to the tune of N500 million and two reliable sureties in like sum.

One of the sureties must be a first-class emir, while the other must be a senior civil service officer.

The court also ordered Doguwa to submit his international passport to the Court Registry and barred him from going to his constituents during the coming gubernatorial and state House Assembly elections scheduled for March 11, 2023.

The embattled Majority Leader has been under investigation since December 2021 when he was arrested by the police in Kano State over the alleged offences.
