EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct free and fair elections in Nigeria.

The NEF spokesman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made this known on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s special election programme, The 2023 Verdict.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

According to Baba-Ahmed, the NEF believes in INEC’s capacity, credibility, and competency to conduct the general elections scheduled to take place on February 25 and March 11, 2023.

He further stated that the northern region has no reason to doubt that INEC would compromise the elections.

Baba-Ahmed commended INEC for its efforts in improving the electoral process, adding that the commission has made massive improvements in its processes.

He also called on those who have reservations about the use of the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems (BVAS) to come forward with sufficient proof to support their claims.

“At this stage, we believe in INEC, we believe in what they have done. We have not found any basis for doubting the credibility or the competence of INEC to conduct an election,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He also emphasized that there has been no evidence of partisanship or bias from INEC in the North, adding that he believes in the leadership of INEC and is confident that the commission will deliver a credible election if given a chance.

The NEF’s expression of confidence in INEC comes at a time when there have been concerns about the credibility of the electoral process in Nigeria.
