President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially appointed Daniel Bwala as the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, replacing Ajuri Ngelale, who previously held the position.
Bwala confirmed his appointment while addressing State House correspondents on Monday, clarifying the roles of media advisers within Tinubu’s administration.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Bwala stated, “The role assigned to me by Mr. President is the same role formerly occupied by Ajuri Ngelale. However, our focus remains on supporting the president’s mandate, and we are all colleagues working toward a common goal.”
This appointment concludes Ngelale’s tenure as the president’s spokesperson. Ngelale had announced an indefinite leave of absence on September 7, citing family health concerns. In his statement, he expressed hope to return to national service after addressing the medical challenges affecting his immediate family.
However, sources within the presidency suggest Ngelale’s departure stemmed from internal conflicts, particularly a protracted power struggle with Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Insiders revealed that Ngelale’s close ties with influential figures, including Seyi Tinubu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, initially strengthened his position. Despite this, the feud between him and Onanuga escalated, straining relationships within the presidency.
The rivalry reportedly began after Tinubu’s 2023 election victory, as both men held overlapping roles.
Civil servants noted confusion over their duties, further fueling tensions. Efforts by ministers and top appointees to mediate were unsuccessful, with Ngelale allegedly resisting reconciliation attempts.
Sources also alleged that Ngelale’s difficult relationship with journalists and media professionals contributed to his dismissal.
A presidency insider remarked, “He was perceived as arrogant and disrespectful, which eroded his credibility with key stakeholders.”
With Bwala’s appointment, the administration hopes to streamline communication and foster unity among its media team as it works to deliver on Tinubu’s agenda.
